The Mandalorian Essential Timeline

It seems there’s a lot of people out there that have been confused about the timeline of The Mandalorian and where exactly it takes place in Star Wars canon. To the casual viewer this is understandable, after all this is the saga that went from 4-6, to 1-3, to 7-9.

Today you’re in luck though as we’ll give you the timeline of all things that are essential to the story of The Mandalorian thus far. That’s right, we’ll include Ahsoka, Bo Katan, Cobb Vanth, and even Boba Fett details.

The Star Wars timeline revolves around the Battle of Yavin, from A New Hope. Any events that occurs before the battle of Yavin is counted backwards in the timeline and anything that occurs after is counted sequentially.

BBY = Before battle of Yavin

• The Darksaber is created by Tarre Vizla, sometime before 1019 bby. He was the first Mandalorian on record to join the Jedi Order. It is a symbol of the Mandalorian clan Vizla, and later the Mandalorian terrorist group Death Watch. According to Mandalorian custom, one could only obtain the Darksaber by defeating the previous owner in combat. Should they have claimed it any other way, their claim was considered illegitimate.

• Death Watch is formed some time after the Mandalorian civil wars. Mandalore is now a pacifist planet with Duchess Satine Kryze in control of the planet. Death Watch members reside on Concordia, a moon of Mandalore. They seek to one day reinstate the warrior ways of Mandalore.

• Grogu is born, and brought to the Jedi temple on Coruscant.

THE PHANTOM MENACE – 32 BBY

• Darth Maul, presumed dead, survived being cut in half by Obi-Wan Kenobi.

• Boba Fett “born” as an unaltered clone of Jango Fett. Fathered by Jango.

ATTACK OF THE CLONES -22 BBY

• Jango Fett killed by Mace Windu, Boba Fett left orphaned.

• Ahsoka Tano becomes Anakin Skywalker’s Padawan.

• Death Watch succeeds in taking back Mandalore, (Clone Wars – Season 2, The Mandalore Plot) with the help of Maul. Maul challenges Death Watch leader Pre Vizla, the current owner of the Darksaber, to a duel and beheads him. Maul is now the owner of the Darksaber and ruler of Mandalore.

• Bo-Katan Kryze, a member of Death Watch and leader of the Nite Owls (An elite warrior group within Deathwatch), watches as Maul murders her sister Satine Kryze, the Duchess of Mandalore. Bo-Katan and the Nite Owls are the last loyal members to Pre Vizla, and though the rightful ruler, flees Mandalore.

• Maul stores the Darksaber on his home world of Dathomir.

• Din Djarin’s parents are killed by battle droids during the Clone Wars, Death Watch Mandalorians take in Din as a foundling.

• Ahsoka leaves the Jedi Order.

• The Siege of Mandalore– (Clone Wars Season 7) Bo-Katan reaches out to Ahsoka for aid to take back Mandalore. Ahsoka goes to her former Jedi allies with the message. They allow Ahsoka to bring a company of clone troopers commanded by Captain Rex to help Bo-Katan take back Mandalore from Maul and the terrorists.

REVENGE OF THE SITH – 19 BBY

• Order 66. Notable Jedi survivors include- Anakin Skywalker (as Darth Vader) , Ahsoka Tano, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Yoda, Caleb Dume- later known as Kanan Jarrus, Grogu, and Cal Kestis (Jedi Fallen Order)

• SOLO: A Star Wars Story – 10 BBY

• Ahsoka begins working with the Ghost Crew, a rebel cell, under the codename of Fulcrum. Eventually they join forces and help spark the Rebellion. – 5 BBY

• Bo-Katan and Sabine Wren, a member of the Ghost Crew, take out a super weapon on a now desolate planet of Mandalore. Bo-Katan reclaims the legendary Darksaber.

• Ahsoka Tano, along with Kanan Jarrus and Ezra Bridger, encounter Darth Vader on the ancient Sith planet of Malachor V. Ahsoka duels Vader as the Ghost Crew gets away. The ancient Sith temple collapses onto the two but we see only Vader get away.

• Ezra finds a portal into the World Between Worlds, a mystical plane within the Force with pathways existing between time and space. While inside Ezra sees and hears moments from all over Star Wars timeline, he finds the moment of Ahsoka dueling Vader and pulls Ahsoka out, into the World Between Worlds and saving her life. Ahsoka then heads back in the portal after Vader has left, back into “her time”.

• Ezra sacrifices himself to defeat Grand Admiral Thrawn, using Purgils which have attached themselves to Thrawn’s star destroyer and they jump into hyperspace to an unknown location. Both are believed to still be alive deep within the Unknown Regions.

• ROGUE ONE – 0 BBY

A NEW HOPE – 0 BBY

• Boba Fett is seen working for crime lord Jabba the Hutt.

EMPIRE STRIKES BACK – 3 ABY

• Boba Fett tracks down Han Solo and Leia Organa for the Empire. Fett takes Solo back to Jabba the Hutt.

RETURN OF THE JEDI – 4 ABY

• Boba Fett falls into the Sarlacc pit, thought to never be seen again…

• Cobb Vanth reclaims Mos Pelgo from mining thugs with the help of Boba Fett’s armor which he purchased off of some Jawas.

• Battle of Jakku – 5 ABY. The Empire is finally defeated, a year after the “death” of the Emperor and destruction of Death Star II.

• Moff Gideon comes into ownership of the Darksaber, it is unknown currently how this happened.

THE MANDALORIAN – 9 ABY

• Din Djarin encounters Cobb Vanth, Bo-Katan, Ahsoka Tano, and Boba Fett in his journey to bring Grogu to his people.

• Ahsoka and Sabine Wren (Rebels Epilogue) gear up to go find Ezra. *It’s not confirmed whether this takes place before season 1 of The Mandalorian or after the events of Chapter 13 “The Jedi” but Dave Filoni seems to hint that it’s the latter.*
