We’ll See These Characters Again

The last couple of weeks have brought sparks of news about the return of beloved Sequel Trilogy characters.

The first rumbling came from Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy who mentioned our heroes in an interview last week.

“Certainly, those are not characters we’re going to forget,” Kennedy said in the interview. “They will live on, and those are conversations that are going on with the creative team as well.”

This absolutely made sequel fans’ ears (like myself) perk up. It’s sort of one of those obvious things you knew would happen eventually but it’s just great to hear it. If you take this quote and add it up with the “report” from the fall that Kennedy and Daisy Ridley were having lunch together then you can speculate even more so. Hey, the two are probably just friends and were having lunch together but we can dream. SOMETHING must’ve come up during that lunch, right? Ridley even teased, while promoting her film Chaos Walking, that “something will come up” in regard to her playing Rey again.

There are always rumblings here and there about Oscar Issac and John Boyega returning as well with both pretty much saying they’d be down if the situation was right. With the smashing success of Disney+ it’s certainly plausible to think that some of these characters will have their stories continued through the streaming platform rather than the big screen. What do you think though? Would you prefer the big screen or streaming for post-TROS content?

The other nugget that came up last week was that Adam Driver was asked if he’d ever want to return to his role of Kylo Ren/Ben Solo.

“No, I’m totally not against (doing more Star Wars),” Driver said in an interview. “For me, it’s a filmmaker’s medium, so my only thing is working with great filmmakers. I always just follow people I’d be interested in working with, and whether I’d be right for the part – things like that. No, definitely not averse.”

So once again it all depends on the situation which makes sense. From Driver’s interview history it seems like he really loved playing Kylo Ren and he’s proud of the character, going as far to say he’s given Kylo merch to kids he’s met (like Ben Affleck’s son).

This is an interesting bit because as we know…Ben Solo is dead…or is he? We won’t go there right now but we’ll say he’s dead. A Kylo Ren project prior to The Force Awakens OR in between The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker would as the kids say SLAP. If we go the other route and Lucasfilm finds a creative way that Ben could be alive, well…that would be something. Seeing something with Finn, Rey, and Ben as Jedi would be unbelievable but we’ll save that for another day (if that day comes).

If I could pick any project to happen with these characters it’d absolutely be a Finn and Rey series with Rey training Finn to become a Jedi after TROS. We’d have Resistance heroes like Poe and Rose popping in too of course.

I do want to say that we’re certainly VERY excited with the Star Wars content that’s currently on the menu (Book of Boba, Mando, Ahsoka, Kenobi, Andor, etc.) BUT the rumblings about continuing the stories of the Sequel Trilogy heroes (and villains…) is very fun to speculate on. We’re all lucky to be Star Wars fans right now, what a time!
